Every week a customer asks us whether installing gutter guards means they can stop cleaning their gutters. The honest answer: gutter guards reduce cleaning, they do not eliminate it. Here is how to decide what suits your home and budget.

What gutter guards actually do

A quality aluminium or steel mesh stops leaves and large debris from entering the gutter, keeps birds and possums out of the roof cavity, and adds a layer of ember protection in bushfire-prone areas. What it cannot stop is fine material: pine needles, seed pods, dust and grit still pass through or settle on top of the mesh.

The real maintenance comparison

Without guards, a typical Sydney home needs cleaning two times a year. With well-installed guards, that usually drops to a light service every 12 to 24 months — we check the mesh, clear the valleys and confirm the downpipes run free. Guards pay for themselves fastest on two-storey homes, where every clean involves more time and access equipment.

When guards are worth it

We recommend guards when the house sits under constant leaf fall, when access is difficult or dangerous, or when the owner simply does not want to think about gutters between services. We recommend regular cleaning instead when the roof has minimal tree exposure: paying for guards a coastal apartment block with no trees nearby rarely makes sense.

A warning about cheap mesh

Thin plastic mesh sold at hardware stores degrades in Australian UV within a few seasons, sags into the gutter and traps debris underneath, making things worse. If you are going to install guards, use a metal mesh rated for our climate and have it fitted properly at the edges.
