What does roof painting involve?

A proper roof restoration has four stages: high-pressure cleaning, repairs to tiles, pointing or screws, priming, and two coats of roofing membrane. Preparation is the difference between a finish that lasts years and one that peels, so we never skip the cleaning and repair stages.

Roof painting helps extend the life of your roof by adding a protective layer against UV rays, moisture, and general wear and tear. It also improves the aesthetic of your property.

When done with high-quality materials, roof painting can last up to 10-15 years. Regular maintenance and inspection will help prolong the lifespan of the paint.

What people ask Google about this

These are the questions Google itself shows for this service. Here are our answers.

Can a Colorbond roof be repainted?

Yes. The surface has to be washed down and any rust treated first, and the coating has to be one made for pre-painted steel. Repainting a Colorbond roof is usually about appearance and heat rather than protection, since the sheet itself carries its own coating; if it is rusting at the screws, that is a fastener job, not a paint job.

The rules this job has to meet

Australian standards and Code requirements we work to, with the source for each.

Ridge capping is bedded and pointed, not glued

AS 2050 governs how ridge and hip capping is bedded and pointed. Flexible pointing compound is what holds the capping as the roof moves; when it cracks and lets go, the capping lifts in wind and water tracks straight into the roof space.

Tiles are only rated to 15 degrees and steeper

AS 2050, the installation standard for concrete and terracotta roof tiles, applies to roofs pitched at 15 degrees or more. Below that the tile system falls outside the standard and a sheet metal profile is the compliant answer, not more bedding and pointing.

Source: AS 2050:2018, Standards Australia

Under 18 degrees a tiled roof must be sarked

Any tiled roof pitched at less than 18 degrees has to have sarking underneath it, whatever the rafter or truss length. On older Sydney houses re-roofed before that rule bit, this is a common reason a tiled roof leaks in wind-driven rain.

Usually done with this

  • High-Pressure Cleaning — Paint will not hold on lichen or chalked surface, so the wash comes first every time.
  • Roof Repointing — Ridge capping gets re-bedded before painting, otherwise the new coat cracks along the ridge.
