If you live between Manly and Palm Beach, your gutters work harder than almost anywhere else in Sydney. Salt air corrodes metal faster, coastal storms dump branches and debris, and the gum trees that make the Northern Beaches beautiful also fill gutters with leaves all year round.
The short answer
For most Northern Beaches homes we recommend a professional gutter clean twice a year: once in late autumn after the heaviest leaf fall, and once before the summer storm season. Homes directly under large gums or pines — common in Collaroy Plateau, Avalon and Bilgola — often need a third visit.
Why coastal homes clog faster
Three local factors speed up gutter problems here. First, leaf litter from eucalypts is oily and breaks down slowly, forming a dense mat that traps water. Second, salt spray accelerates rust once that wet mat sits against the metal. Third, southerly busters arrive fast and heavy: a blocked downpipe that was a minor issue on a dry week becomes water pouring into your eaves during one storm.
Warning signs you should not ignore
Plants sprouting from the gutter line, water staining on fascia boards, overflow marks on paths after rain, and birds repeatedly landing on the same roof corner (they nest in debris). If you can see any of these from the ground, the inside of the gutter is worse.
