What the mesh is made of, and why that decides how long it lasts
Aluminium. Holds its shape, does not go brittle in UV, and is non-combustible. It is the default on most Sydney roofs for a reason.
Steel and stainless. Stronger, and used where the span or the traffic on the roof needs it. The catch is metal compatibility: the wrong combination of mesh, fixings and roof sheet in a street near the water sets up corrosion between the two metals, and the fixings go first. On a coastal roof the screws and clips matter as much as the mesh does.
Plastic and poly mesh. The cheapest option and the one we get called back to. A few Sydney summers of UV make it brittle, it sags down into the gutter, and once it sags it holds debris instead of shedding it, which is the opposite of the job. It is also combustible, so it is not an option on bushfire-prone land.
Why gutter guard fails, when it fails
It is almost never the mesh itself.
- Wrong aperture for the trees. A mesh sized for broad eucalypt leaves lets pine needles and casuarina through, and a mesh fine enough to stop needles clogs solid under figs. The tree over your roof decides the mesh, not the other way round.
- Fitted flat instead of on the fall. Guard only sheds debris if it slopes. Laid flat across the gutter, it becomes a shelf.
- No access left. A guard that cannot be lifted means the gutter underneath never gets checked. Fine for two years, a problem in year five.
- Valleys left open. The valley is where most of the water and most of the leaf off a roof ends up. Guarding the gutters and ignoring the valleys solves half the problem.
- Fitted over a gutter that was already finished. A rusted or sagging gutter does not get better with a mesh over it. It gets harder to see.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the benefit of gutter guards?
Gutter guards help keep your gutters clean by preventing debris from entering. This reduces the frequency of gutter cleaning and prevents clogs, which can cause serious water damage.
What areas do you serve for gutter guard installation?
We install gutter guards across the Eastern Suburbs, the Inner West and the Northern Beaches, and each has its own page: gutter guards in the Eastern Suburbs, in the Inner West and on the Northern Beaches. We also take on work across the North Shore, Sutherland Shire and the Hills District. If you are not sure we cover your suburb, ask and we will tell you straight away.
Do you offer free quotes?
Yes. Monkeys Roofing provides free quotes across Sydney. We inspect the job, explain exactly what is needed and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours of the visit. Call 0452 223 327 or use the quote form on this page.
Can I install gutter guards myself?
Physically yes, and plenty of people do. Two things go wrong: the guard is fitted over a gutter that was never cleared, which seals the blockage in, and the fixings are chosen without matching them to the roof profile, so they lift in wind or corrode near the coast. Both are harder to undo than to get right the first time.
Are gutter guards worth it in Australia?
It depends on what is over your roof. Under broad-leaf trees, worth it: a twice-yearly clean becomes an annual check. Under pines or casuarinas, only with a fine aperture mesh, because needles thread through a standard one and mat inside the gutter where you cannot see them. In a bushfire-prone area the ember role changes the specification entirely.
Does gutter guard mean I never clean the gutters again?
No, and anyone who says so is selling. It turns frequent cleans into an occasional check. The guard itself collects debris on top, and near pines or in heavy leaf-fall streets that still needs clearing.
Will it work with solar panels on the roof?
Yes, and it matters more with panels: debris that washes off the array ends up in the gutter, and access for cleaning is harder once panels are in. We fit guard around existing arrays regularly.
Can it be installed on any roof profile?
Tile, corrugated and most concealed-fix profiles, yes. The fixing method changes for each, so we confirm your roof profile before giving you a fixed price.
