Small Gutters Under Big Street Trees

The Inner West has mature street trees and small roofs, which is a difficult combination for guttering. The gutters on a terrace or a worker’s cottage are narrow, the falls are short, and a good part of the drainage runs between roof planes rather than around the outside. It does not take a full autumn to block one. Guard keeps the bulk of the leaf litter out and cuts how often somebody has to be on the roof, which counts for more here than usual because access is often through a neighbour’s property.

What the Installation Includes

Gutter cleared and checked

The gutter is emptied and checked for rust holes and sagging before any guard goes over it. Guard on a failing gutter only hides the problem.

Old profiles measured

Terrace and cottage gutters are often original and not a standard modern profile, so the guard is measured to what is actually on the house.

Fixing method chosen for the roof

On slate and old terracotta the fixing method matters more than the product. We pick the one that does not break the roof.

Internal gutters and valleys

The runs between roof planes are the ones that put water inside the house, so those are done first.

Downpipes and outlets checked

Outlets on an old terrace are small and block easily, so they get checked while we are up there.

Offcuts carried out

There is nowhere to leave rubbish on a terrace block, so the offcuts leave with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually, but it depends on the gutter profile and the roof material. On slate and old terracotta the fixing method matters more than the product, and if something would risk damaging the roof we will tell you rather than fit it anyway.

It keeps leaf litter out of them, which is where most of the trouble starts. It does not change how they are built, so they still need looking at from time to time.

Less often, and that is the point of it. Fine grit still gets through, so a check is still worth doing, particularly before the wet season.

The rules this job has to meet

Australian standards and Code requirements we work to, with the source for each.

Sydney sheds about 1,213 mm of rain a year

Observatory Hill has averaged around 1,213 mm of rain a year on records kept since 1858. A 150 square metre roof therefore sends roughly 180,000 litres a year through its gutters and downpipes, which is why a blockage shows up as overflow so quickly.

Valley gutters need 15 mm of freeboard

A valley gutter must be laid at more than 12.5 degrees, with at least 15 mm of freeboard and side angles of 12.5 degrees or more. Below 12.5 degrees it has to be designed as a box gutter to AS/NZS 3500.3 instead, which is a different job with different flashing.

Downpipes go as close to the valley as possible

The Code requires downpipes to sit as close as practical to where valley gutters discharge. On roofs with several valleys feeding one length of gutter, a downpipe in the wrong position overloads that section long before the rest of the run fills.

Usually done with this

  • Gutter Cleaning — The gutter has to be cleared and checked before any guard goes on, or the blockage is sealed in.
  • Tree Trimming Over Roofs — Cutting back what overhangs the roof takes most of the load off the guard before it is even fitted.

What is different about roofs in the Inner West

Quoting gutter guard installation in the Inner West is not the same job as quoting it elsewhere in Sydney. Ordinary storms flood thousands of homes here: The Marrickville Valley flood study found 3,989 properties taking more than 150mm of water in a 1 per cent storm, and 3,151 properties still flooded to… That is the kind of detail that changes the materials, the timing and the paperwork on a roof in Haberfield or the streets around it. Everything below links to the council or standard it comes from, so you can check it yourself.

Ordinary storms flood thousands of homes here

The Marrickville Valley flood study found 3,989 properties taking more than 150mm of water in a 1 per cent storm, and 3,151 properties still flooded to that depth in a storm as common as a 2 year event. Flat ground and slow drainage are the cause, so undersized downpipes and blocked gutters bite in ordinary rain.

Most local flooding is overland, not creek

In the Dobroyd and Hawthorne Canal catchments, 885 of 1,446 and 690 of 1,036 flood planning lots are affected by overland flow alone. Where your roof water is discharged, and whether it is piped properly to the kerb, matters more than how close you are to a watercourse.

Adding roof area can trigger a water tank

Marrickville DCP requires on site detention for any extension adding 40 square metres or more of roof or paving, and allows a 5,000 litre retention tank instead on lots over 200 square metres, plumbed to toilets, laundry and taps.

You need a permit to cut back that overhanging branch

Any tree 4 metres or taller is a prescribed tree in the Inner West, and pruning more than 10 per cent of its canopy needs a permit, or a full application if the property is heritage listed. Clearing a gutter by lopping a neighbours branch is exactly that situation.

Brush box drops all year, not just in autumn

Ashfield street tree records list brush box avenues in Cecil, Oak, Federal, Ilford and Orpington Streets, with prickly paperbark common elsewhere. Both shed leaf and bark year round, so gutters here fill slowly and constantly rather than in one seasonal drop.
