Why Gutter Guard Earns Its Keep on the Peninsula

Two things make guttering hard work here. Eucalypts drop litter all year rather than in one season, and it is oily enough to mat together instead of washing through. On streets backing onto bush at Belrose, Frenchs Forest, Oxford Falls and Elanora Heights, that same dry litter sitting in an open gutter is also the material embers land in during summer. A quality metal mesh does two jobs at once: it keeps the bulk of the leaf out, and it removes the easiest place for an ember to catch. It does not end cleaning altogether, but it turns a twice-yearly job into a light service.

What the Installation Involves

Gutter and roof-edge assessment

We look at the gutter profile, the roof edge and what is dropping onto the roof before recommending anything.

Gutters cleared first

Existing debris comes out before the mesh goes on. Covering a full gutter only traps the problem underneath.

Mesh chosen for the property

The mesh is selected to suit your roof and gutter type, and what the property is dealing with, rather than one product for every house.

Fitted along gutters and edges

The mesh is fitted along the gutter line and roof edge so leaf is kept out without blocking water flow.

Final inspection

We check the finished run and confirm water still moves freely into the downpipes.

Maintenance advice

We tell you what the guard will and will not stop, and roughly how often it will still need a look.

Frequently Asked Questions

It reduces the work rather than ending it. Fine material such as pine needles, seed and grit still gets through or settles on top, so a well-fitted guard usually means a light service every year or two instead of clearing full gutters twice a year.

It helps. A metal mesh stops embers landing in dry leaf litter inside the gutter, which is one of the common ways homes catch. It is a sensible layer on a bush-edge property, not a replacement for a bushfire plan.

We do not recommend it. Thin plastic mesh degrades in Australian UV within a few seasons, then sags into the gutter and traps debris underneath, which leaves you worse off than having no guard at all.

The rules this job has to meet

Australian standards and Code requirements we work to, with the source for each.

Downpipes go as close to the valley as possible

The Code requires downpipes to sit as close as practical to where valley gutters discharge. On roofs with several valleys feeding one length of gutter, a downpipe in the wrong position overloads that section long before the rest of the run fills.

One downpipe per 12 metres of gutter

The National Construction Code allows a single downpipe to serve no more than 12 metres of eaves gutter. Long unbroken runs on Sydney terraces and wide Federation frontages often sit over that limit, which is why they overflow in heavy rain even when the gutter is clean.

Sydney sheds about 1,213 mm of rain a year

Observatory Hill has averaged around 1,213 mm of rain a year on records kept since 1858. A 150 square metre roof therefore sends roughly 180,000 litres a year through its gutters and downpipes, which is why a blockage shows up as overflow so quickly.

Usually done with this

  • Gutter Cleaning — The gutter has to be cleared and checked before any guard goes on, or the blockage is sealed in.
  • Tree Trimming Over Roofs — Cutting back what overhangs the roof takes most of the load off the guard before it is even fitted.

What is different about roofs in the Northern Beaches

Quoting gutter guard installation in the Northern Beaches is not the same job as quoting it elsewhere in Sydney. Clean gutters are a fire measure, not housekeeping: The Rural Fire Service advises against box gutters and complicated roof shapes on bushfire prone land because they trap debris, and warns that second storey gutters… That is the kind of detail that changes the materials, the timing and the paperwork on a roof in Manly or the streets around it. Everything below links to the council or standard it comes from, so you can check it yourself.

Clean gutters are a fire measure, not housekeeping

The Rural Fire Service advises against box gutters and complicated roof shapes on bushfire prone land because they trap debris, and warns that second storey gutters make last minute clearing dangerous. Removing litter from roof, valleys and gutters before summer is part of protecting the house.

Autumn arrives as a burst, not a drizzle

Terrey Hills averages 1,216mm of rain a year, almost the same as central Sydney, but with a much sharper autumn peak of 175mm in March alone. Gutters here have to swallow concentrated bursts, which is exactly when an undersized or leaf packed system overflows into the eaves.

Most gutter trees here cannot legally be removed

You can prune up to 10 per cent of a canopy a year without approval, but the eucalypts, angophoras and banksias that fill Northern Beaches gutters are not on the exempt list, and illegal tree work carries fines up to 1.1 million dollars. Gutter protection is usually the only lawful answer.

Norfolk Island pines are never exempt

The council exempt species list lets you remove camphor laurel, cocos palm, pines and liquidambar without consent, but it specifically does not exempt Norfolk Island Pines, and no exemption applies inside a heritage conservation area. The Moreton Bay and Port Jackson figs are carved out too.

A cleared block can still be bushfire prone

Category 1 vegetation carries a 100 metre buffer on the Council map and categories 2 and 3 carry 30 metres, so a property with no trees on it can still be mapped simply because of the reserve next door. Work on mapped land can pull in AS 3959 requirements.
