Australian standards and Code requirements we work to, with the source for each.
A valley gutter must be laid at more than 12.5 degrees, with at least 15 mm of freeboard and side angles of 12.5 degrees or more. Below 12.5 degrees it has to be designed as a box gutter to AS/NZS 3500.3 instead, which is a different job with different flashing.
The Code requires downpipes to sit as close as practical to where valley gutters discharge. On roofs with several valleys feeding one length of gutter, a downpipe in the wrong position overloads that section long before the rest of the run fills.
The National Construction Code allows a single downpipe to serve no more than 12 metres of eaves gutter. Long unbroken runs on Sydney terraces and wide Federation frontages often sit over that limit, which is why they overflow in heavy rain even when the gutter is clean.

Gutter repairs in the Northern Beaches has its own rules: heritage areas, salt air and tight access all change how the job is done. Everything below links to the council or standard it comes from, so you can check it yourself.
The Rural Fire Service advises against box gutters and complicated roof shapes on bushfire prone land because they trap debris, and warns that second storey gutters make last minute clearing dangerous. Removing litter from roof, valleys and gutters before summer is part of protecting the house.

Gutters here have to swallow concentrated bursts, which is exactly when an undersized or leaf packed system overflows into the eaves.

Wind, shelter and areas the rain never washes push the real corrosivity higher still, which is why the steel grade used here is not the one used inland.
Source: BlueScope Technical Bulletin TB-35 and AS 4312:2019The standard warranty requires fresh water washing at least every six months of any roof area rain does not wash naturally, and does not cover failure to replace corroded fasteners. On a coastal home that means eaves, awnings and wall abutments need washing deliberately.

It can. On the Northern Beaches Council bush fire prone land map, Category 1 vegetation carries a 100 metre buffer and categories 2 and 3 carry 30 metres, so even a cleared block can be mapped and work on it can pull in AS 3959 requirements. The Rural Fire Service also advises clearing litter from roofs, valleys and gutters before summer.

Northern Beaches roofs corrode faster because much of the peninsula is a surf marine environment. BlueScope names Manly Beach as its metropolitan example of that class, the harshest of its three salt classes under AS 4312, and wind, shelter and areas the rain never washes push real corrosivity higher still.
Manly heritage areas keep the original roof form, bushfire buffers reach 100 metres and only 10 per cent of a canopy can be pruned…
